Grant Redden:
Western, wildlife and landscape artist and instructor
NEW INSTRUCTOR! We are proud to bring in the versatile and talented Grant Redden to teach his workshop on painting the Western painting genre en plein aire. As an artist who paints Western subjects that range from ranch life to still life to wildlife to landscape, Redden is an accomplished artist and instructor who we are proud to add to our roster. We expect him to bring his great work ethic and fantastic attitude to share with students of his five-day class.
Redden himself has studied under master artists Mark Daily, Jim Norton, Walt Gonske, Gerald Fritzler, and Gerald Merfeld. He also draws much inspiration from the works of Sargent, Sorolla, Fechin, and many of the American Impressionists such as Twachtman, Metcalf, and Weir. He is always willing and able to share the expertise he has gained with others.
Growing up working sheep and cattle on his father’s ranch, Grant is familiar withthe horse and rural life of the West. Working in oil, watercolor, and occasionally in pastel, he has developed a sensitivity and style all his own but the influence of his ment
ors is felt in the broad range of textures in his paintings and colors on his palette.
Grant has participated in the annual Buffalo Bill Art Show and Sale in Cody, Wyoming for the past six years. He was awarded an Artists’ Choice Award in that show in 2006. Grant has also participated in annual shows by the Charles Russell Museum and the Western Rendezvous of Art.
CLASS DESCRIPTION: With as much plein-air painting as weather permits, Grant Redden will help to improve students’ familiarity with their tools: paint, canvas, easels, brushes, etc. so that handicaps are minimized, resulting in more success. He will teach how to work with the landscape, animals, and elements of the Western genre using color, value, edges, drawing, and thinking to improve the students’ paintings. Students will watch daily demos as well as a slide presentation. Grant will also take time to discuss with students the work of the masters, including those that influenced him.
