The west conjures up visions of the wild frontier. Painting it involves the landscape, costumed figures and the animals that form integral parts of a successful portrayal of the west, its early history and the contemporary life of the present westerner. My interest in this colorful era starts in Montana, where the works of C.M. Rusell influenced so many. |

Although the camera has become a very useful tool, there is no substitute for painting outdoors, and drawing and sketching people and their surroundings. Rodeos are for me a good source of material for horse and rider action. I find the personal observation important. Putting this together with the appropriate landscape, hopefully will make the painting come alive.
There have been many examples of great western painting done in the past where the artist had a first-hand knowledge and look at what was happening, it will be difficult for the contemporary artist who must rely on historical museums, photos and early paintings for his details and accuracies to capture the feel and authenticity.
